Your presentation isn't going anywhere if your projector can't produce enough light to throw images across a room and onto a screen. Accordingly, the brightness (measured in ANSI lumens) of your projector is worth investigating. Generally, the brighter the room, the brighter projector you will need.
While projectors with 1000 or less ANSI lumens may be sufficient for projecting in darkened room settings, they may not be bright enough for use in rooms with normal lighting. When considering how much brightness your projector will need, keep in mind what the lighting situation will typically be in rooms where you will be presenting and the size of the image you will be projecting. The more ambient light in the room or the larger the image size, the brighter your projector should be.
The ANSI lumen rating for projectors currently range from a low of 800 for some home theater projectors, to up to 3000 for portable projectors. Installation grade projectors are normally 3500 ANSI lumens to as much as 10,000 for large venues. For on-the-road presentations, 1200 to 2000 ANSI lumens will work well for many situations. Larger conference rooms and smaller church sanctuaries will need 2000 to 3,500 ANSI lumens. Auditoriums, multi-purpose rooms, and larger church sanctuaries will likely need to project between 4000 and 10,000 ANSI lumens due to larger screen sizes and the possible use of long-throw lenses.
